Macau passes restriction on vape!

2022-09-23

On August 31, Beijing time, Macau's parliament passed an amendment to the law on smoking prevention and control, which expands on the existing law on smoking prevention. The bill prohibits the manufacture, distribution, import, export and transportation of vape in the region.

The law provides for fines of MOP4,000 for individuals and MOP20,000 to MOP200,000 for businesses that violate the regulation. Although the proposal was passed unanimously, several lawmakers expressed the hope that the government should go further and impose a total ban on vape during a debate in the Legislative Assembly, according to the Macau Business Daily.

In Macau, the sale of vape has been restricted since 2017. Alvis Lo, director of the Macau Health Bureau, said, "The purpose of these measures is to protect public health. The use of vape is harmful to health, not only for pregnant women, children and adolescents, but also exposes non-smokers to nicotine and other harmful chemicals."

The legislative amendment will take effect three months after it is published in the CSP's Gazette.
